In The Beginning

In most places around the world, llamas are relatively unknown creatures. We're just now beginning to understand and appreciate the capabilities of these wonderful animals. In their native countries high in the Andes of South America, llamas have played an important part in the history of the native people and continue to be, to this day, an important part of their daily lives. Llamas are very versatile and capable of doing many things well. In North America, like in their native countries, llamas are used for work, recreation, pets, shows, education, driving and numerous other fun and practical uses.

Llamas make excellent driving animals. They're very intelligent, learn quickly and retain what they learn for long periods of time. Unlike some people I know, llamas have a curiosity and love for seeing and doing new things. They can and do get bored doing the same old thing. Driving gives them the opportunity to explore and discover whatever is just around the bend. Even though a llama will never be able to pull a wagon full of folks, a mature, full size llama using the proper equipment should have no problem pulling two adults or several young people.

The llama driving experience began with our family over ten years ago, when we purchased our first two llamas. Like so many llama folks, we were faced with the dilemma .... what were we going to do with them! Fortunately for me, I had seen a very brief clip of someone driving a llama and I knew right then, that's what I wanted to do with our llamas. It's sort of a long and winding story of how we learned to drive and taught our llamas to drive, but it has been a wonderfully fun experience now for many years. So we hope you'll also load up for a fun ride with these wonderful driving companions.
